NEW BST NBL Phase Ii Project Will Help Improve Map Ta Phut’s Carbon Footprint With More Sustainable Processes

The new BST Phase II project will lead to a reduction in CO2 generation, improving the carbon footprint of the Map Ta Phut industrial zone.

Sarens has participated in the construction of the new plant by carrying out up to 42 lifts of the new modules forming the steel structure, using the CC-6800 crane with a lifting capacity of up to 1250 tons.

The new BST Phase II project, aimed at processing NBL, a synthetic rubber for nitrile gloves, will contribute to the improvement of the Map Ta Phut industrial area through employment generation and more sustainable practices.

Map Ta Phut is a middle-size city located in eastern Thailand, in the province of Rayong. In 1990, the government officially opened the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, a large industrial park focused on petrochemical and related industries. Its activities have been linked to air and water pollution. The BST NBL Phase II project focuses part of its efforts on improving the carbon footprint of the plant, favoring more sustainable operations

Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental solutions, has been involved in this project by providing assistance in the modular installation for the new steel structure being built at the plant. The task consists of lifting and positioning the steel module in its correct location.

The new plant is dedicated to the processing of NBL. This is a synthetic rubber with butadiene as the main raw material. This is the base material for manufacturing nitrile gloves, the primary use of which is located in industries such as healthcare, medical and food.

For this task the Sarens engineering team selected a CC-6800 crane, which has a load capacity of up to 1250 tons. This machine was in the crawler crane configuration in order to be able to make small movements as required to facilitate the lifting of heavy loads. In total, up to 42 modules making up the steel structure have been lifted and placed and stacked one on top of the other according to the client’s drawings, which have been Sarens’ working guide throughout the entire project, which took approximately 2 months.

The CC-6800 crane used for the project was transported to the work site by trailer and this took 10 days to complete. To carry out the work Sarens had a team of 6 riggers, for the whole process of assembling the crane, an operator, in charge of handling the crane, as well as the supervisor.

The main challenges faced by the Sarens team were orographic and meteorological. The first of these related to the working space itself, which was cramped, making it difficult to move and operate the crane. The second problem arose when the machinery arrived at the site during the rainy season, which made it extremely difficult to assemble the crane due to the

strong winds and intense storms. As a result, it took 13 days after its arrival at the site for the crane to be fully ready for operation.

Sarens owns more than 60 years of international experience in the development and installation of strategically important projects. In the energy sector, Sarens has been directly involved in the Clean Fuel Project’s expansion works in Thailand, or in the ensemble of two jackets in the Al Shaheen Oil Field in Qatar. The company has also worked in the expansion of the S-Oil plant in Ulsan, South Korea, in the construction of the Petroperu refinery in Talara (Peru), and in the Skikda refinery in Algeria.
